Shoulder injuries and shoulder pain are common with athletics, recreational activities, and even just daily tasks. Injuries can range from minor sprains or strains to severe injuries (muscle tear, fracture) from a fall, throwing or over using your shoulder. Pain can arise from muscle strains, rotator cuff tears, joint arthritis, tendonitis, dislocations, fractures or ligament disruptions. Your pain may even be coming from a problem in your neck!

Any injury involves several stages of recovery that include the repair of the injured joint, physical therapy for shoulder injuries and pain management throughout the process. While these three activities were traditionally managed by different professionals, the pain management portion of a patient’s care is a natural fit for their physical therapy treatment. These two aspects of recovery overlap in many ways and the proper physical therapy for shoulder pain treatment can both improve freedom of movement while reducing joint pain.

In years past most pain management involved prescription drugs and restriction of movement for a period of time. While these steps helped to minimize the pain, they did little to return the joint to its original flexibility. In fact, many times this sedentary period actually made recovery even harder because of swelling that occurred in the inactive joint. It was soon discovered that the root cause of much of the pain after an injury was caused by this swelling and simply relieving this problem provided comfort without the need for powerful narcotics.

Physical therapy is a critical and essential part of any successful recovery and can be very effective with improving circulation. As a patient’s circulation increases, the additional blood flow can help to reduce swelling in the affected joint. This improved circulation also provides an abundance of the nutrients and oxygen the surrounding muscles need to recover. In many cases a regular physical therapy session for shoulder can maintain this increased circulation and eliminate the need for additional medications. Other physical therapy techniques such as electrical stimulation can also be used if needed to augment the treatment and provide additional benefits.

Shoulder pain physical therapist can be helpful in first distinguishing the problem, treating it, decreasing pain, and restoring your function. Many times conservative care through physical therapy can prevent surgery. At Fort Lee Physical Therapy the latest evidence-based techniques are utilized to restore flexibility, joint mobility, strength, and balance.

If you are looking to return to recreational sport/activity or just to be able to reach without pain to put on your coat, shoulder pain physical therapist has the tools available to help you achieve your goals.
